Discovering Trieste, Middle-European city with unique landascapes

Trieste is a charming city by the sea sitting on the coast between the Adriatic Sea and Slovenia, in the easternmost region of Italy. Trieste is an exciting and historic mix of many influences and a languid, literary place with a middle-European character.

Trieste faces the sea and is set in a wild, karstic plateau, which physically isolate it from the rest of the Italian peninsula, almost entirely surrounded by Slovenia. Thanks to the harbour and its proximity to other nations, Trieste has been influenced over time by many cultures making it at the same time an extensive port and a commercial shipping trade.

Your stroll through the city centre can start from the Harbour and visiting Piazza Unità d’Italia rich of neoclassical buildings extremely charming with their Habsburgs’ imprint. Other attractions of the old town are the Molo Audace, Gran Canal and the Roman Theatre.

The city shoreline is worth a view from the see: tiny bays, small harbours and breathtaking reefs with Mediterranean vegetation. The area is also home for different Protected Areas such as Val Rosandra Nature Reserve, the Falesie di Duino Nature Reserve, and the Marine Reserve of Miramare, with sharp rocks featured in the sea landscape and also a wide variety underwater flora and fauna. When here don’t forget a visit to the wonderful Miramare Castle overhanging the sea and made with the white rock of Istria.

These unique natural wild areas are ideal for many activities and a wide variety of excursions is offered. Walking enthusiasts can follow the Sentiero di Rilke (Rilke's Path), a route dedicated to the poet Rainer Maria Rilke which starts from Duino to Sistiana, touching on the spectacular reefs of the Falesie di Duino Natural Reserve and boasting some astonishing sceneries. If you want to experience the cliffs of Karst, you will need to head to Val Rosandra: trekking, mountain biking or extreme sports like free climbing. Caves of karstic plateau are also pleasurable destination for many speleologists. Rivers and waterways are instead destinations for kayaking, rafting, and canoeing.

Sea and water sports enthusiasts can practice just off the coast of these protected areas: there are loads of sailing or scuba-diving tours to explore the wide variety of underwater flora and fauna.

Trieste and its province offer a calendar rich in events and diverse traditions. The most famous sporting event is the Barcolana or Regata d'autunno, one of the largest sailing races in the world. Barcolana is an historic and fascinating sailing race in the Gulf of Trieste. The first edition was held in 1969 and every year a record number of of sailing vessels (over two thousand in 2017) are pitted against each other, offering the public a very scenic view and great excitement.

The culinary traditions of the Trieste Province are rich and varied, due to Austrian, Venetian and Friulian influences. A few gems of this savory cuisine are granseola alla Triestina (with spider crab), jota soup (with sauerkraut and beans), zuf (a polenta dish); gnocchi de pan (bread dumplings) and gnocchi de susini (prune dumplings).
Be sure you will accompany these aromas with excellent wines typical of the Karst area, such as Terrano, Malvasia and Refosco.
